Unhealthy Profession

Did you know that truck driving ranks among the unhealthiest jobs in America? Issues like obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, minimal physical activity, and insufficient sleep are prevalent. A national survey found that 61% of long-haul truck drivers suffer from two or more of these health problems. Having spent nearly four years as a truck driver for Prime Inc., one of the largest trucking companies in the U.S., I can attest to this reality.

Transition to a New Role

Now, I’ve shifted careers to become the driver health and fitness coach at Prime. Additionally, I founded Fitness Trucking, a company dedicated to creating health and fitness programs tailored for truck drivers. This career path may be unusual for a Yale graduate with a philosophy degree, but it’s been an unexpected yet fulfilling journey.

Childhood Motivation

Growing up in Oswego, Illinois, as Tony Blake, the only African-American family in my neighborhood, I always felt different. My father encouraged me to transform that difference into a driving force for excellence in academics and sports. Inspired by a distant cousin who won an Olympic gold medal, I set my sights on swimming, ultimately aiming to be the first African-American swimmer in the Olympics.

College Choices and Swimming Dreams

I excelled in academics and extracurriculars, gaining admission to numerous prestigious universities, including Yale. Despite knowing that Yale’s swim team had a poor record and no athletic scholarships, I intended to boost the team’s performance. During my time there, we made significant progress, but I fell short of qualifying for the 1992 U.S. Olympic trials by just eight-tenths of a second, leaving me disheartened.

Search for Identity

After leaving Yale just short of graduation, I spent 15 years exploring the world and learning about my heritage across Africa. Conversely, I returned to Yale to complete my degree and worked briefly in nonprofits, but I soon yearned for adventure again. In 2008, I transitioned into trucking at the suggestion of a friend, drawn to the lifestyle that allowed for exploration and financial stability.

Realizing Health Needs

After two months of driving, I noticed changes in my body that concerned me. Realizing how quickly I had gained weight, I started exercising during breaks in creative ways. Inspired by an infomercial for an exercise machine, I developed a high-intensity workout routine using body weight. This led not just to personal fitness, but also to a desire to inspire other drivers to improve their health.

Coaching for Change

With newfound motivation, I proposed an in-house health and fitness program to Prime. Upon approval, I created a structured 13-week program focused on nutrition and fitness. The results were significant, with participants reporting considerable weight loss and improved health. Encouraging individuals to embrace exercise openly was a rewarding experience, and through this journey, I found a fulfilling path I never expected to take.
