Fleets are approaching decarbonization with effective, proven methods rather than mere hype. This theme resonated throughout this year’s ACT Expo. The “Run on Less: Messy Middle” initiative illustrates this approach, as fleets shared their experiences focusing on long-haul decarbonization. The upcoming testing phase will feature battery-electric, hydrogen, renewable diesel, and natural gas powertrains in various applications. This Run seeks to gather real-world data on the effectiveness of different alternative fuels in the face of operational complexities.

Blue Bird and Harbinger Launch Medium-Duty Offerings

Blue Bird introduced two new solutions: a propane-driven strip chassis and an all-electric step van, both targeting Class 5-6 fleets. The electric vehicle can travel up to 130 miles on a single charge, while the propane model features Ford’s 7.3L V8, enhanced with Roush CleanTech’s emissions reducing technology. Production for these models, characterized by their compact turning radii and driver assist features, is scheduled for 2026.

Harbinger contributed to the medium-duty discussion with its plug-in hybrid system, achieving a range of 500 miles through a gas-powered range extender combined with electric drivability. Tailored for fleets requiring extended operation, the system incorporates Panasonic lithium-ion batteries and a low-emission 1.4L engine, providing both versatility and swift DC charging.

Aftertreatment Systems Advance Ahead of 2027

With new NOx emissions regulations calling for an 80% reduction, attention has shifted to aftertreatment systems. For instance, Cummins showcased technologies like electric heaters integrated into the exhaust, which rapidly warm components during cold starts and low loads, moments when NOx emissions peak. Other companies are enhancing in-cylinder combustion processes to decrease soot and simplify system design.

The aim is uniform: to reduce failures, enhance uptime, and ensure compliance without sacrifices. Additionally, emerging diagnostic tools promise improved fault detection and fewer unnecessary regenerations.

Autonomous Trucking Approaches Reality

The autonomous software provider Plus has successfully validated its SuperDrive system, conducting tests without a driver present. This system features autonomous fallback safety mechanisms and is currently being trialed on public roads in both the U.S. and Sweden. Partnerships with original equipment manufacturers, including a new collaboration with Hyundai, are facilitating a near-commercial debut of the system, especially in hydrogen truck deployments.

Be sure to watch the video for more highlights from the event.
