MPD’s Major Crash Unit is looking into a pedestrian fatality on New York Avenue involving a truck transporting military equipment.

WASHINGTON — A representative from the U.S. Army has confirmed that the truck driver responsible for the fatal accident involving a woman in Northeast D.C. was a commercial transporter moving military gear from the anniversary parade.

Sierra Nichole Smith, 39, reportedly ran onto New York Avenue Northeast on Monday night, where she ended up in front of the truck, as stated by the Metropolitan Police Department.

The truck drove off with Smith trapped underneath until it reached the 2800 block of New York Avenue, where she was dislodged and subsequently struck by an SUV traveling behind the truck.

Emergency medical personnel from DC Fire and EMS pronounced Smith dead at the scene.

According to the Army source, “The accident did not involve any soldiers or military personnel.” The Army expressed their condolences to the family.

Notably, the truck was part of a convoy being escorted by police while returning military equipment to a base in Jessup, Md., just two days after the parades in D.C.

Both the truck driver and the SUV driver remained at the scene until police arrived, as reported by the MPD. The incident is under investigation by MPD’s Major Crash Unit as of Tuesday night.
