Tragic Incident Involving Truck Claims Woman’s Life

A woman lost her life after being struck by a large truck that was reportedly transporting heavy equipment showcased during the military parade over the weekend.

According to the D.C. police, the incident occurred on Monday night around 9:30 p.m., when a woman unexpectedly ran onto New York Avenue in Northeast, near Bladensburg Road. She stumbled and became trapped beneath a tractor trailer, which dragged her for several feet.

Following this, she was also hit by a Chevy Suburban that was following the truck.

D.C. Fire and EMS responded swiftly and tried to perform lifesaving measures on the woman, identified as 39-year-old Sierra Nichole Smith, but unfortunately, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The drivers of both vehicles involved have remained at the location of the incident, according to police reports.

It has been noted that the large truck was carrying a tank that had been part of the 250th Anniversary Army Parade held on Saturday, as reported by WTOP’s partners at 7 News.

The investigation into the accident is being managed by detectives from D.C.’s Major Crash Investigations Unit.
