In Washington, D.C., a woman tragically lost her life on Monday night after running into a street and falling in front of a truck carrying Army equipment used for the service’s 250th anniversary celebration, according to a defense official.
Details of the Event
The semi-trailer truck was part of a convoy delivering equipment showcased during the Army’s milestone celebration. This event took place on Saturday and featured a festival at the National Mall as well as a parade involving military tanks and vehicles throughout the capital.
The Fatal Incident
Around 9:30 p.m., the commercial hauler was traveling along New York Avenue when 39-year-old Sierra Nichole Smith suddenly “ran into the roadway, stumbled, and fell in front of the semi-trailer truck,” as stated by the Metropolitan Police Department.
Aftermath of the Accident
The pedestrian was pinned beneath the truck and dragged for several blocks before being dislodged and then struck by a Chevrolet Suburban that was following the truck.
Emergency Response
Emergency services from D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services were called to the scene and attempted to perform lifesaving measures, but sadly, Smith was pronounced dead at the location.
Status of the Drivers
Both drivers involved in the incident remained at the scene. It remains uncertain whether the convoy is at fault for the tragic accident.
