Navigating economic uncertainty: rising inventory in truck and construction equipment

LINCOLN, Neb., June 4, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Recent market reports from Sandhills Global indicate that inventory levels for used trucks, semi-trailers, and construction equipment in the United States are experiencing month-over-month growth across Sandhills platforms, including TruckPaper.com and MachineryTrader.com. While the used heavy-duty truck and semi-trailer sectors are showing stable trends despite increases, the used medium-duty truck inventory continues its upward trajectory, even as asking and auction values decline.

Scott Lubischer, Manager at Truck Paper, comments, “The truck market is filled with uncertainty. Dealers are not selling trucks for upgrades but rather to meet operational needs. To stimulate sales, dealers are reducing prices while grappling with decreased port activity, lower freight volumes, and tariffs.”

In the realm of used heavy- and medium-duty construction equipment, Sandhills has noted a consistent decline in inventory levels, despite minor monthly increases in May. Asking prices and auction values have dropped across all used construction equipment segments. The overall trends remain stable, but ongoing declines in value could lead to shifts in these trends.

Stephanie Olberding, Director of North America Construction, states, “Used equipment dealers are managing a complex market. Seasonal demand drops have contributed to the slight increases in heavy-duty construction inventory observed in May.”

The Sandhills Equipment Value Index (EVI) serves as a crucial measure in all of Sandhills’ market reports, allowing buyers and sellers to track equipment market values for informed decisions on acquisitions, liquidations, and other business operations. The EVI encompasses data on auction and retail equipment and highlights the disparity between asking and auction values.

Key highlights from Sandhills market reports include significant shifts in the used heavy-duty truck, semi-trailer, farm machinery, and construction equipment markets. Detailed reports are available upon request.
