Tragic Accident on I-65

A fiery collision claimed the life of a semi truck driver and caused significant traffic delays on I-65 southbound Thursday morning, resulting in a 5-mile backup as emergency responders worked to put out the flames.

Details of the Incident

The accident occurred shortly after 10:30 a.m. near Southport Road when the truck, loaded with wooden pallets, veered off the roadway. It collided with several interstate signs and a guardrail before catching fire, according to officials from the Indianapolis Fire Department.

Witness Accounts

Witnesses reported that the truck left the road approximately 250 feet from the point it came to rest.

Driver’s Condition

It remains unclear if the 60-year-old driver experienced a medical episode before the crash. The identity of the driver has yet to be released, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Response and Traffic Impact

Indiana State Police closed the southbound lanes of the interstate as fire crews battled the blaze. Firefighters faced challenges in securing a water supply because there were no hydrants nearby, necessitating the use of water relayed from several miles away.

Fire Control Efforts

Firefighters managed to bring the fire under control within 45 minutes and continued to address hot spots for an additional 45 minutes. The fire was officially “marked out” by 2:25 p.m. Cleanup of spilled fuel was conducted by the department’s HazMat Team and the Marion County Health Department using absorbent materials.

Reopening of Interstate

By 3 p.m., the interstate slowly began to reopen to traffic, alleviating the earlier backups.
