Importance of City Vehicles
Vehicles and heavy machinery operated by various departments in Asheville, including police, fire, public works, sanitation, and water services, are crucial for the city’s maintenance, public safety, and community infrastructure. These specialized vehicles and their operators have been instrumental in the city’s recovery after the significant destruction caused by Hurricane Helene. This provides a fantastic opportunity for families and children to learn about the vehicles and skills needed to operate them.
Truck City AVL Event
Asheville Parks & Recreation (APR) is hosting the Truck City AVL event at Tanger Outlets Asheville on Saturday, April 12, from 1 to 4 PM. This free community event invites the public to explore and experience a variety of vehicles, including rescue units, public works equipment, tractors, and construction machinery. A designated quiet hour will take place from 1 to 2 PM to create a comfortable environment for individuals with sensory sensitivities.
A Community Tradition
“Truck City AVL is a fantastic event that brings the community together, allowing them to get an up-close look at these impressive machines,” said D. Tyrell McGirt, APR Director. “Not long ago, we were uncertain if we could hold this event due to ongoing recovery efforts in the community. It underscores the resilience and civic pride of our dedicated staff who prioritize this beloved tradition for families.”
Featured Vehicles
Attendees will have the chance to see several vehicles from the City of Asheville’s Fire, Parks & Recreation, Police, and Public Works departments. This includes a patch truck, patrol vehicles, and construction equipment. Additionally, other unique vehicles from organizations like Asheville Jeep Tours, Carolina Ready Mix, and Buncombe County will be on display.
Activities and Attractions
With over 40 vehicles featured, community members are encouraged to take their time exploring. APR has organized a range of activities in the Rec n Roll Mobile Play Zone, including games, a children’s driving course, and a trackless train for rides, along with giveaways for attendees.
Event Location
Tanger Outlets Asheville is situated at 800 Brevard Road, and the Truck City AVL event will occur rain or shine in the back parking lot near the food court entrance.
