DTNA Highlights Solutions at Work Truck Week

During Work Truck Week, Daimler Truck North America (DTNA) showcased more than just their vehicles. The focus was on upfitter solutions, safety integration, and an important message: Upfitters play a crucial role in the overall process.

Aaron Scates, vice president of vocational and medium-duty market development, along with Kevin Otzenberger, manager of medium-duty and vocational product marketing, discussed the advancements in Freightliner and Western Star platforms, emphasizing faster and smarter integration.

“Upfit efficiency is a major theme this year,” noted Scates. “Our goal is to set the standard for upfit efficiency in the industry.”

A significant aspect of this initiative is QuickFit, which is powered by Chec software. This system aims to enhance upfits through programmable modules and plug-and-play functionality, both inside and outside the cab. QuickFit offers body control and interlock customization with features such as customizable dash switches and factory-installed touchscreen displays, with standard backup cameras expected soon, according to Scates.

Focus on Integrated Safety and Job-Site Functionality

In addition to upfitter solutions, DTNA highlighted its Detroit Assurance safety suite. The Active Brake Assist 5 (ABA 5) utilizes a fusion of radar and camera systems to assist with forward collision mitigation.

“The radar coordinates with the camera to determine if the truck needs to stop for an obstacle,” explained Scates. “Together, they provide an optimal collision mitigation system.”

Also showcased was the Side Guard Assist, which protects pedestrians and workers by issuing audible warnings when someone enters a blind spot. “If a person is walking beside the truck at a job site, an audible alert will notify the driver,” Scates added. “This feature is available on every Freightliner and Western Star model, regardless of the engine or transmission.”

Enhancing EV Support with Upfitter Considerations

Otzenberger discussed how DTNA’s upfitter solutions are progressing alongside their electric vehicle (EV) offerings. The latest EM2 updates feature shorter wheelbases, EPTO capabilities, and support for refrigerated bodies, directly addressing feedback from food and beverage fleets.

“We’ve received requests for a non-CDL option for food and beverage deliveries, which is crucial,” commented Otzenberger.

To maximize usability at depots, DTNA has introduced a rear charging port for easier plug-ins in confined spaces. New battery options feature a 194 kWh pack for Class 6 trucks with a range of up to 180 miles, and a 291 kWh pack for Class 7 trucks capable of reaching 250 miles.

“This is the best range we’ve achieved across our electric vehicle lineup to date,” Otzenberger concluded.
