Jerry Cox and JLC Second Chance Trucking

Over the past year, Jerry Cox has gained significant insights since establishing a Siloam Springs office for the nonprofit JLC Second Chance Trucking. He has extensively networked and connected with diverse individuals to promote awareness of his 501(c)(3) organization.

Cox has participated in various galas and events, meeting NFL legends, nonprofit executives, and both current and former governors. His office walls showcase photos of many supporters who have rallied behind his cause.

Challenges of Running a Nonprofit

Operating a nonprofit has presented its challenges. Cox emphasizes the importance of patience and notes that leading a nonprofit is markedly different from managing a for-profit entity. “Building a solid foundation is crucial before pursuing your goals,” he explained. “After a year, that foundation is in place, and I’m ready to begin developing further.”

Cox, a former owner-operator with over five million safe driving miles and four decades in trucking, founded this nonprofit to assist formerly incarcerated individuals in finding truck driving jobs. Having faced his own job search challenges after being wrongfully imprisoned in Texas, Cox understands the obstacles those recently released encounter.

Making a Difference

The first beneficiary of Cox’s nonprofit was Ricky Hernandez from Siloam Springs, who sought help after being rejected from a local trucking firm due to his background. After fulfilling promises made by Cox, Hernandez graduated from Cops CDL Academy and began working as a truck driver for Coca-Cola in August 2024.

In collaboration with Cops CDL Academy, several individuals, including Hernandez, have successfully graduated, with ongoing support from Cox’s nonprofit. Despite funding challenges from various agencies, there are still resources available for referrals from Cox’s organization.

Future Goals and Challenges

Moving forward, one of Cox’s primary focuses will be securing housing for the individuals he helps, understanding that stable housing is critical for recently released people searching for jobs. He also plans to expand his outreach to assist individuals in rehabilitation centers, including women facing domestic abuse, by hiring a supportive female staff member.

“My ultimate mission is to help individuals like Ricky,” Cox stated. “At the end of the day, it’s about reuniting families and enabling them to contribute positively to their communities.”
