Tragic Collision Claims Lives of Two Elderly Women

Incident Details

Kentucky authorities report that an 89-year-old woman and her 91-year-old relative lost their lives in a crash involving a dump truck that collided with a restaurant.

Crash Circumstances

The Boone County Sheriff’s Office stated that the two women were passengers in a Chevrolet Equinox when the vehicle, which was halted at an intersection in Walton on April 8, attempted a left turn. The 66-year-old driver of the SUV inadvertently entered the path of an approaching dump truck loaded with gravel.

Collision Impact

The dump truck’s driver, also aged 66, tried to evade the SUV but ended up crashing into it. The impact forced the SUV off the roadway, where it hit a guardrail and rolled over, finally resting on its roof.

Casualties Identified

Tragically, the two family members riding in the SUV were pronounced dead at the scene. They have been identified as 91-year-old Eva Mulberry from Williamstown and 89-year-old Betty Hillard from Lexington.

Restaurant Incident

The dump truck continued off the road, crashing into four parked vehicles before plowing into Boonedocks Pub and Grub. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the six patrons present inside the restaurant at the time.

Eyewitness Accounts

Amanda Dearing, an employee at the pub, described the alarming moment: “We heard it, and then it came through the building. Glass and everything just went everywhere. It sounded like a freight train going through a wall,” she recounted.

Ongoing Investigations

Both drivers were transported to a hospital; the SUV driver sustained critical injuries, while the dump truck driver suffered minor injuries. Authorities, who believe limited visibility at the intersection contributed to the crash, are continuing their investigation. The sheriff’s office reported that no charges have been filed against either driver.

Community Response

Boonedocks Pub and Grub expressed their condolences in a Facebook post, stating their heartbreak over the accident. “Everyone’s thoughts and prayers should be with the families of the two ladies who lost their lives as well as the drivers involved,” they stated, calling it a “horrific and tragic accident.”
