KERRY O’BRIEN: After returning from summer breaks, many will share experiences of encounters on the road with hasty truck drivers, involving tailgating and other alarming behavior.
KERRY O’BRIEN: Long-haul truck drivers too have their own stories to tell. Despite a record low in the national road toll for all accidents, over 200 fatalities each year involved large trucks from 2002 to 2012, a sobering statistic.
KERRY O’BRIEN: Authorities often point to driver exhaustion and mechanical issues as contributing factors to these tragedies. Drug abuse among drivers is also a concern. As we reveal tonight, numerous large trucking firms have distressing safety records. Industry representatives may dispute any connection between accidents and the financial strain on drivers, yet many believe an undeniable link exists.
STEPHEN LONG, REPORTER: In the early hours, Brian Turpie begins his day on the road. As someone who’s been an interstate truck driver for 40 years, he recalls how his father’s occupation influenced his career choice.
STEPHEN LONG: Currently, the lead-up to Christmas sees high business demand, but it also invites peril for truck drivers, with reports of multiple fatalities recently. Uncontrolled competition forces freight rates down, impacting driver wages and work hours, often compelling them to work more extensively to make ends meet.
STEPHEN LONG: Fatigue, coupled with speeding, pose severe risks to truck drivers. The pressures of competition in this sector can clash with safety, as seen in devastating accidents. Insider reports reveal alarming deficiencies within major companies, reflecting a significant decline in safety standards as competition mounts and operational budgets tighten.
KERRY O’BRIEN: Fatal truck incidents impact families, and the legal ramifications often fall heavily on the drivers. With regulations and remuneration changes on the horizon, the fate of the Road Safety Remuneration Tribunal remains uncertain, leaving many to question how tragic accidents like these can continue to occur.
