Hugo Man Sentenced for Embezzlement

A resident of Hugo has been sentenced to over four years in prison for embezzling $1.3 million from the truck repair company he was employed at and misusing the funds for extravagant purchases.

Details of the Case

Leon A. Keener, 55, received his sentence on Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Minneapolis after admitting guilt to mail fraud associated with the embezzlement scheme he conducted from 2015 to 2022 while serving as the service manager at the I-State Truck Center located in Inver Grove Heights.

Luxury Spending and Gambling

Keener allocated part of the embezzled funds towards purchasing luxury vehicles and funding gambling excursions to Las Vegas. State records indicate that during the period of embezzlement, he acquired a Ford Mustang GT, a Ford Expedition, a Jeep Wrangler, and a 1930 vintage Ford, among other items.

Sentence Details

In addition to his 4¼-year prison sentence, Judge Ann Montgomery mandated that Keener serve two years of supervised release and ordered him to repay $1,314,633 in restitution.

Defense Argument

Prior to the sentencing, defense counsel requested that Keener receive a “substantial downward variance” from the federal sentencing guidelines, which recommend a sentence between 3½ to 5¼ years.

Childhood Trauma Consideration

Keener’s attorney, Ian Birrell, submitted a statement to the court highlighting the severe childhood traumas Keener experienced, suggesting that these hardships should be considered in the sentencing decision.

Prosecution’s Response

The prosecution contested the defense’s claims, presenting evidence of Keener’s extensive criminal history, which includes multiple convictions for writing bad checks and three felony convictions for theft-related offenses.

Final Sentencing Decision

Ultimately, Judge Montgomery concurred with the prosecution’s recommendation of a 4¼-year prison sentence.
