Meet Mike Gaffin, “The Boston Trucker”
Mike Gaffin, widely recognized as “The Boston Trucker,” initially did not see himself as an influencer. His journey began in 2009 when he, driven by a passion for the varied experiences of his trucking job, aimed to share those moments with his young son, Nathan.
Starting His YouTube Journey
At that time, when Nathan was just a couple of years old, Gaffin recorded a video while loading at a construction site. Without knowing what to do with it, he created a YouTube channel named “The Boston Trucker” to showcase it for Nathan. Today, the channel boasts almost 68,000 subscribers and features over 900 videos. His presence extends across social media platforms, where he shares TikTok videos, Instagram photos, and Facebook posts, all of which contribute to the growth of his YouTube audience.
Early Influences and Career Beginnings
Gaffin developed his love for trucking early, often riding along with his father, David, in a White 9000 truck. He recalls being securely seated on a milk crate during these rides. David exposed his sons to the trucking community, taking them to events and shows, nurturing the same passion for trucking in Mike. After obtaining a commercial license at 18, Gaffin began his career with local jobs before transitioning to over-the-road (OTR) trucking when he was permitted to drive interstate.
Life on the Road
His OTR journey spanned nearly 15 years, working with companies like Bud Meyer Truck Lines and Walmart Trucking. Gaffin recalls handling hazardous materials for New Century Transportation, noting the tough schedules and long hours, which certainly took a toll on his sleep and health.
Family Decisions and Lifestyle Changes
In 2003, Gaffin married and became a father in 2006, deciding to reduce his time on the road after Nathan’s birth. He wished to avoid the absence he experienced growing up with his father often on the road. Gaffin’s concern for his father’s health, which was affected by the demands of being an OTR driver, further influenced his decision to prioritize family.
Engagement in the Trucking Community
Over the years, Gaffin remained active in the trucking community, participating in truck shows and events while capturing photographic memories. His influencer status soared in 2017 when Shell Rotella invited him to the Shell SuperRigs competition. Since then, he has become more involved, ultimately serving as a judge at the event in 2023, while still keeping his focus on driving.
Trucking and Influencing Towards the Future
Despite the various offers for promotional content, Gaffin prioritizes his trucking career and family while considering social media as a side venture. He continues to find joy in his work, even while on family vacations. His message to fellow truck drivers emphasizes the importance of camaraderie, kindness, and mutual support within the trucking community, highlighting the significance of maintaining a strong bond among professionals in the field.
