Komatsu Tests World’s First Hydrogen Combustion Dump Truck

Komatsu has announced the initiation of tests on “the world’s first large dump truck equipped with a hydrogen combustion engine.”

Testing at Komatsu’s Facility

The HD785 rigid-frame truck has been retrofitted with the internal combustion engine technology and is currently undergoing “proof-of-concept tests” at Komatsu’s Ibaraki Plant in Japan, as reported on February 19. The truck has a payload capacity of 92 metric tons, while its diesel equivalent generates 1,200 horsepower.

Innovative Development Goals

According to Komatsu, “This marks the world’s first attempt to equip a large dump truck with a hydrogen combustion engine.” The company aims to gain insights into hydrogen engine applications, forming a basis for future advancements in “hydrogen-powered construction and mining equipment.”

Collaboration with KEYOU

This hydrogen combustion truck development is a result of a collaboration with German startup KEYOU, which specializes in retrofitting diesel engines with hydrogen engines.

Differences in Technology

Notably, the hydrogen combustion engine differs from hydrogen fuel-cell technology. While hydrogen fuel cells create electricity to power electric engines using hydrogen, hydrogen combustion engines function like traditional internal combustion engines, using hydrogen as fuel instead.

Cost and Emissions Benefits

Komatsu claims that this system is more cost-effective than battery power and hydrogen fuel cells, as it utilizes many existing powertrain components from diesel engines. Additionally, it generates near-zero emissions, primarily releasing water vapor.

Safety and Infrastructure Considerations

In light of potential safety concerns related to hydrogen engines and the limited infrastructure for hydrogen fueling, Komatsu has committed to working with industry organizations and stakeholders to address these challenges. The upcoming proof-of-concept tests will assess driving performance, operational duration, fuel efficiency, and safety protocols for high-pressure hydrogen gas usage.

Future Directions

In conjunction with its hydrogen combustion technology, Komatsu is also focusing on developing hydrogen fuel-cell machinery. In December 2023, the company announced a partnership with GM to create a hydrogen fuel cell module for its 930E electric-drive mining truck and has collaborated with Toyota on a concept hydrogen fuel cell system for a medium-sized excavator.

Broader Industry Trends

Other construction equipment manufacturers are also exploring hydrogen as an alternative fuel source to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. This reflects a growing trend in the industry towards more sustainable solutions.
