Investigation Updates Following the Crash

Mr. Ashton reported, “We have some results from drug and alcohol testing conducted after the crash, but I’ve been instructed not to share those until the driver has been interviewed. Operational reasons prevent me from disclosing more at this time.”

He added, “There are still some longer-term results that we need to collect. Later today, we will provide detectives with more information regarding the crash reconstruction. Modern vehicles are equipped with GPS and various data-tracking systems, which will aid in a comprehensive reconstruction of the incident.”

Driver’s Hospitalization and Investigation Status

“The fact that the driver is in the hospital and we have not yet interviewed him does not imply inactivity; significant reconstruction work has been conducted in the interim,” stated Mr. Ashton. Police have indicated that the driver’s medical condition is unrelated to the accident.

Joint Investigative Efforts

The crash is currently being investigated by both the homicide squad and the major crash investigation unit. Victoria Police Deputy Chief Commissioner Shane Patton emphasized the importance of maintaining an open mind, saying, “That’s why we’re conducting a dual investigation. We haven’t ruled out any possibilities, and speaking with the truck driver is critical to this process.”

Driver Under Suspicion

Mr. Patton confirmed that the truck driver remains under police guard due to suspicions of serious offenses, including potential charges of culpable driving leading to the deaths of four individuals.

Clarifying Rumors

Commissioner Ashton and Deputy Commissioner Patton dismissed rumors regarding the truck driver being pulled over earlier that day. Investigative actions also extended to Mr. Bajwa’s residence in Cranbourne, Melbourne, which was raided on Wednesday night. “What was discovered there is still being investigated,” Mr. Ashton stated.

Ongoing Drug and Alcohol Testing

A blood sample for drugs and alcohol was collected on Wednesday night from the driver. The truck involved in the incident displayed the logo of Connect Logistics, a Sydney-based trucking company, which has closed its website following the crash. The company specializes in delivering dairy and other refrigerated products and had previously listed a truck driver’s position in Melbourne in 2017.

Family Silence and Company Response

Attempts to reach the company, as well as Mr. Bajwa’s family, for comments have been unsuccessful.
