AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Significance and Challenges of Long-Haul Truck Drivers

Long-haul truck drivers are vital to the economy, playing a crucial role in delivering almost everything consumers wear, eat, and use on a daily basis. However, their health is at risk due to the demanding nature of their job, which often requires them to spend up to 11 hours driving each day.

KXAN Traffic Anchor Erica Brennes spoke with a former truck driver who is now dedicated to promoting healthier lifestyles among those in the trucking industry. Michael Lombard, who now coaches classes at Orangetheory Fitness, shares his journey from the road to wellness.

Family Roots in Trucking

Lombard has a deep connection to trucking, as his family founded one of the oldest motor carriers in the United States. “Trucking is in my blood,” he stated, reflecting on Lombard Brothers Incorporated, established in 1923, which operated until 1984.

Health Concerns on the Road

While entering the family business felt natural, Lombard was aware of the health risks associated with long hours on the road. He noted the early deaths of family members in the trucking industry, motivating him to maintain his fitness. The Centers for Disease Control highlight the difficulties drivers face, such as irregular hours, limited physical activity, unhealthy food options, and significant stress.

Chronic Disease Statistics

Lombard emphasized that the demanding nature of trucking can shorten a driver’s lifespan by an average of 16 years, with an average life expectancy of just 61. Chronic diseases are prevalent in the industry; for instance, diabetes rates in truck drivers are nearly twice that of the general workforce.

Lombard’s Personal Transformation

Michael Lombard experienced personal challenges with his weight, reaching 278 pounds at one point. Documenting his fitness journey on social media, he embraced running as an accessible form of exercise while on the road, managing to complete five marathons and recently his first Ironman competition.

Advocating for Health in the Industry

Now involved with the nonprofit Project 61, Lombard is committed to raising awareness and providing resources to support truck drivers. He highlights the indispensable role they play in the economy, transporting goods essential to daily life.

The Importance of Health and Routine

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, commercial drivers can operate up to 11 hours within a 14-hour period, followed by a required 10-hour break. Lombard pointed out that maintaining a regular sleep schedule is often challenging, but intentional daily movement, adequate protein intake, and hydration are crucial for optimal job performance. He believes improving the health of the trucking workforce can lead to positive changes across the industry.
