Standoff Ends Peacefully at Titan Tool and Die

A lengthy standoff concluded peacefully on Monday evening as unionized workers at Titan Tool and Die successfully blocked a transport truck from removing equipment from the Howard Avenue facility to the United States.

Union Responds to Tariff Imposition

Unifor Local 195 reported receiving an email on Friday stating that die equipment was to be taken away due to tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump. The union requested a halt to the removal process until they could gain more clarity on the situation.

Blocking Equipment Removal

Despite the union’s efforts, the company proceeded with the removal of dies on Monday morning. A union representative noted that at least one truck managed to leave for Michigan before workers were able to prevent further removals of equipment.

Union Official Voices Concerns

D.J. Lacey, the Skilled Trades National Representative for Unifor overseeing Titan Tool and Die workers, described the situation as an attack on their jobs. He emphasized the union’s determination to protect employment amid the impacts of tariffs.

Community Impact

Lacey expressed pride in the employees for their resolve in defending their jobs. He highlighted the broader implications of the situation, noting that it affects the entire community, as the livelihood of many local businesses depends on the continued employment of these workers.

Upcoming Tariffs and Vendor Requests

With Trump poised to impose reciprocal tariffs on Wednesday and a 25 percent levy on automobiles and parts taking effect on Thursday, Lacey indicated that the vendor had requested the return of their die equipment to the U.S.

Future Negotiations

A meeting between union representatives and Titan officials was scheduled for Monday night, with Lacey hopeful for a positive resolution. He noted the urgency of the situation as April 2 approaches, emphasizing the need for clarity regarding the employer’s plans.

Unifor Local 195 currently represents approximately 30 to 32 employees at Titan Tool and Die, which specializes in manufacturing products for the automotive sector. Attempts to contact Titan Tool and Die for comments went unanswered.
