Commercial truck drivers play a vital role in the nation’s supply chain, often stepping up as safety champions on the roads and acting as first responders in emergencies.
Heroic Actions on the Highway
Timothy VanNostrand, age 64 and the owner/operator of a logging transport business in Northville, New York, found himself in an urgent situation while traveling on Interstate 88 in June 2023.
“It all unfolded quickly,” VanNostrand shared with Fox News Digital.
Instincts in Action
He witnessed a traffic stop by a New York state trooper turn violent as a shootout broke out. “At first, I wasn’t entirely sure what was happening, but I saw the trooper move sideways,” he recounted.
VanNostrand then saw the armed suspect firing through his vehicle’s back window at the trooper, igniting a chaotic exchange of gunfire. He utilized his logging truck to block the suspect’s escape during the harrowing 12-minute incident.
Recognized for Bravery
“Standing there listening to it felt like an eternity,” VanNostrand said, reflecting on the moment. “I was uncertain of my decision, but in the end, it proved to be right.”
Once additional law enforcement arrived, the trooper, who sustained injuries, was transported to the hospital and ultimately survived. VanNostrand was later honored as a “Highway Hero” by the New York State Police and The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company.
Acknowledging Industry Heroes
“The purpose of the Highway Hero program is to raise awareness and appreciation for the impactful role commercial drivers play on the roads and in their communities.”
Goodyear is currently inviting nominations for its 41st annual Highway Hero Award, celebrating truck drivers who demonstrate exceptional contributions beyond their regular duties.
The Impact of Commercial Drivers
According to Joe Burke, the commercial trucking sector is responsible for transporting 72.5% of goods in the U.S. economy, underscoring the significance of the 3.3 million professional truck drivers who make it possible.
“These individuals not only play essential roles in the supply chain, they frequently act altruistically to safeguard others while on the road,” Burke noted.
Nominations Open for Drivers
Goodyear is seeking nominations each holiday season for drivers who deserve recognition for their selfless actions. Eligible nominees must hold a commercial driver’s license (CDL) and be actively working in various vehicle capacities.
Past Highway Heroes
Last year’s winners included VanNostrand and Elijah Ramos, a driver for Ryder System, Inc., who displayed courage when he assisted an injured woman following a severe crash in a remote area.
Ramos emphasized the importance of being present in emergencies, stating that it could take a while for help to arrive in such isolated locations.
Concluding Thoughts
To VanNostrand, his actions were simply part of his job. “Most people in my field would act the same way,” he affirmed. “We all have each other’s backs, and most drivers genuinely look out for everyone on the road.”
