Trump Honors Truck Drivers Amid Pandemic
President Trump hosted an event at the White House to recognize truck drivers for their crucial role during the coronavirus crisis, calling them the “lifeblood of our economy.”
American Truckers: The Foot Soldiers of Victory
At the gathering, Trump stated, “In the war against the virus, American truckers are the foot soldiers who are carrying us to victory.” He emphasized the theme of the event was “thank God for truckers.”
Transportation Secretary’s Acknowledgment
U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao attended the event and remarked on the efforts states are making to support truck drivers, who have faced challenges in obtaining food while on the road. “The whole country is cheering you on; without you, it would be impossible to keep our economy moving,” Chao added, highlighting the industry’s vital role in economic recovery post-pandemic.

Among those present were truck drivers from FedEx, DHL, and UPS, as well as representatives from the American Trucking Associations. The increased public attention on truckers has been beneficial for the industry, prompting some success in engaging with federal and state governments to relax specific regulations.
Challenges Faced by Truck Drivers
According to Brian Fielkow, president of Jetco Delivery, some states have reversed decisions to close truck stops, allowing drivers to access restrooms. However, lengthy detention times, often ranging from three to five hours, remain problematic, particularly when drivers cannot access basic needs such as food and water during these waits.
Need for Private Sector Creativity
Fielkow stressed the need for more private sector initiatives to support truck drivers during this time. For instance, McDonald’s has introduced curbside pickup options specifically for truckers, and food trucks have begun servicing routes to cater to drivers’ needs.
The Importance of Testing and Support
The trucking industry has requested increased access to testing for drivers, especially those operating in coronavirus hotspots. Todd Spencer, president and CEO of OOIDA, emphasized the significant risks drivers take in ensuring national supply continuity. He warned that any decline in driver participation could severely disrupt the nation’s supply chain.
