Truck drivers often encounter mental health issues stemming from isolation, stress, and addiction. Employers can play a vital role in addressing these challenges by prioritizing employee wellness, especially during Mental Health Awareness Month in May.

During a recent webinar, Tanara Ferguson, project manager at Trucking HR Canada, emphasized that a holistic approach to employee wellbeing can significantly benefit companies.

Employers can experience advantages such as decreased absenteeism, reduced presenteeism (when employees are present but not productive), lower costs for benefits programs due to reduced usage, enhanced job satisfaction, and decreased turnover, ultimately leading to improved profitability, as noted by Ferguson.

Best Practices for Stress Reduction

Implementing best practices for mental health can effectively alleviate workplace stress. This includes evaluating job demands, setting achievable productivity targets, and providing constructive feedback. Financial stress can be mitigated through financial planning workshops and options for second deposits in paychecks. Additionally, accommodating at-home concerns can involve offering emergency daycare services or flexible work schedules.

Addressing Isolation

To help long-haul drivers combat feelings of isolation, employers can reimburse unlimited phone data plans, enabling drivers to stay connected with loved ones during extended trips. Furthermore, providing route maps for families can ease their worries and assigning check-in buddies to drivers can offer them a supportive connection. Allowing pets in trucks is another effective strategy to reduce loneliness.

Promoting Healthier Lifestyles

Substance abuse poses another significant issue, and access to resources for help can be crucial. Employers can implement tobacco cessation programs to assist employees in quitting smoking. Furthermore, the physical demands of trucking can lead to health concerns such as obesity, heart disease, and back pain. Regular ergonomic assessments can help alleviate some of these physical issues.

Encouraging Rest and Relaxation

To improve sleep quality, companies should consider providing overnight accommodations for long-haul drivers, access to meditation and sleep applications, and education on the significance of sleep. Ferguson also stressed the importance of making employees aware of wellness programs through newsletters that highlight personal wellness stories, goals, and competitions to encourage a healthier workplace.
