ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) has recognized Oleksandr Tkachuk as a TCA Highway Angel for his prompt action in providing CPR during a roadside medical emergency.
Tkachuk, who hails from Edmonton, Alberta, is a driver for Trimac Transportation based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
On May 5, in Hardisty, Alberta, Tkachuk, an independent contractor with Trimac’s Hardisty branch, stopped to help a vehicle parked on the shoulder of the road.
Tkachuk to the Rescue
“I noticed a vehicle on the side of the road with two young people trying to assist a man who was lying down,” Tkachuk recounted. “Seeing no one else there, I decided to pull over.”
Life-Saving Measures
Upon approaching, Tkachuk recognized that the man was unconscious, while what seemed to be his younger brother was attempting CPR. Tkachuk, who is CPR certified, offered his assistance and took over the lifesaving efforts.
“Having CPR training, I hoped I wouldn’t have to use it, but there I was. I began chest compressions on the man,” Tkachuk explained. The young individuals at the scene held their phone up, with 911 on the line, guiding Tkachuk through the steps. He continued CPR for about 20 minutes until emergency responders arrived and took charge. Unfortunately, the man did not regain consciousness during that time.
Rising to the Challenge
“I wished to know if he survived, but I had no way of knowing,” Tkachuk stated. “I was just doing what I had been trained to do.”
His bravery, quick thinking, and willingness to help in such a critical situation serve as a powerful testament to rising to the occasion.
