USPS Enhances Trucking Safety Policies

WASHINGTON, Jan. 5, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — In an effort to improve safety standards on American roads, the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) will collaborate with its trucking partners to eliminate the use of non-domiciled Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) operators who have not been thoroughly vetted by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. This initiative aligns with the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) recent policies aimed at enhancing roadway safety.

“Ensuring the safety of our workforce and the public is our top priority,” stated Amber McReynolds, chair of the Postal Service Board of Governors. “To uphold the highest safety standards, we will phase out non-domiciled CDL operators lacking proper vetting by the Postal Inspection Service.”

By tightening regulations regarding non-domiciled CDL drivers utilized by third-party contractors, USPS aims to bolster transportation safety, accountability, and enhance overall protective measures.

“USPS has successfully completed a safe and efficient peak season for holiday mail and packages,” remarked Postmaster General and CEO David Steiner. “We believe that this new requirement will further enhance the safety, efficiency, and reliability of our services moving forward.”

The Postal Service transports 55,000 loads daily—accumulating nearly 2 billion miles each year—making operational improvements essential for ensuring safe delivery to over 170 million addresses six or seven days a week.

USPS is committed to fostering a safety culture to reduce accidents among employees and contract drivers, including monitoring relevant industry and government data concerning its contractors.

Please Note: The United States Postal Service operates as an independent federal establishment funded through postage and services, not tax dollars. It serves every American community while celebrating its 250th anniversary amid a modernization plan aimed at achieving long-term financial stability and enhancing service quality, maintaining its reputation as one of the country’s most trusted brands.
