Enhanced Road Safety Initiatives for Truck Drivers

The Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund has ramped up its efforts to lessen road accidents by prioritizing the health and well-being of truck drivers through the Truckers’ Wellness Campaign.

Proactive Approach to Road Safety

In a statement released on Wednesday, the fund outlined that this initiative is part of a broader approach, moving from merely supporting crash survivors to implementing proactive, people-focused strategies that aim to prevent incidents.

Collaboration with Key Partners

Partnering with the Walvis Bay Corridor Group and the traffic law enforcement department, the campaign offers onsite health screenings, education on road safety, and compliance awareness at important checkpoints and transport routes.

Addressing Health Risks

Truck drivers frequently experience long shifts, fatigue, and health issues, which can impair alertness and decision-making. The MVA Fund emphasizes that tackling these factors is essential for enhancing road safety.

Supporting Interventions Based on Data

Traffic police assessments indicate that approximately 750 trucks depart from Walvis Bay each day, underscoring the necessity for targeted interventions. Previous screenings have identified prevalent health risks, including hypertension and weight-related problems, linked to fatigue and diminished focus while driving.

Upcoming Wellness Campaigns

The initiative builds on previous activations held in Swakopmund and Windhoek in December 2025, where around 121 truck drivers were screened. Currently, the campaign is running at the major traffic checkpoint in Rundu from March 23 to 24, with the next event planned for Gobabis on March 26 and 27.

Commitment to Driver Wellness

Mobile and fixed wellness clinics run by the Walvis Bay Corridor Group provide health screenings, while the MVA Fund and its partners engage drivers on safe driving habits, fatigue management, and adherence to traffic laws. The activations, occurring from 08:30 to 17:00, aim to holistically support drivers by integrating wellness into traditional law enforcement efforts, with a goal of screening at least 100 truck drivers during this phase.

Focus on Human Elements of Road Safety

The fund asserts that this initiative strengthens the understanding that road safety encompasses not only regulations and rules but also the well-being of individuals, ensuring every journey concludes safely.
