The Importance of the Trucking Industry in India

The trucking industry is a crucial component of India’s booming economy, significantly contributing to the country’s growth. However, the demanding and stressful nature of the work impacts the physical and mental health of truck drivers.

Research Study on Truck Driver Health

A month-long study conducted by Kantar IMRB, in collaboration with Castrol India, examined health issues experienced by over 1,000 truckers, highlighting the hazards associated with their work and environment.

Health Risks for Truck Drivers

Truck drivers face high rates of work-related injuries and fatalities. The report investigates their lifestyle, revealing that over 50% suffer from driving-related health problems, yet 63% do not prioritize their health. Major health issues include physical stress, lack of sleep, obesity, and various pains, as well as mental health concerns.

Challenges Affecting Truck Driver Well-Being

Extended working hours, prolonged absences from home, and challenging road conditions are significant factors affecting their health. Approximately 50% of truckers embark on trips lasting over 12 hours, with 46% driving more than six hours without rest. This highlights the stress associated with long-distance driving. Alarmingly, 62% of drivers have not had a medical checkup in the past year.

Ergonomic Risks Faced by Truck Drivers

Truck drivers encounter various ergonomic risks due to uncomfortable postures, repetitive movements, and limited space for rest. This results in chronic pain in the back, neck, and joints.

Neglect of Health Due to Industry Conditions

The neglect of personal health among truck drivers is worsened by unfavorable environmental and cultural factors, such as poor road infrastructure, badly maintained vehicles, and inadequate access to hygienic food and rest areas. Consequently, many drivers prioritize earning a living over their health.

Improving Driver Health and Well-Being

Omer Dormen, Managing Director of Castrol India, emphasized the trucking industry’s role in national growth and announced efforts to address health challenges faced by drivers. Additionally, experts from The Yoga Institute in Mumbai have developed specific yoga exercises—Truck Aasanas—that truckers can practice while on the move.

The survey encompassed over 1,000 truck drivers (both owner-operators and those driving 10-15 tonne trucks) across major cities including Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, and Kolkata.
