Two Arrested for Selling Fake Insurance Policies in Florida

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (CBS12) — Authorities in Florida have apprehended two individuals accused of peddling fake commercial insurance policies to tow truck operators in Miami-Dade County, as reported by the Criminal Investigation Division of the Florida Department of Financial Services.

On Tuesday, investigators revealed that 24 insurance policies were issued using falsified or misleading information to comply with state-imposed insurance requirements. The victims were vehicle owners who believed they were buying valid insurance coverage.

The Florida Department of Financial Services reported that one suspect, Aliba Lamas Alvarez, lacks a license to sell insurance in the state and is reportedly in the U.S. unlawfully. He was arrested on February 5, 2026, in Miami-Dade County and faces multiple charges, including operating as an unlicensed insurance agent, engaging in a fraudulent scheme, and forgery.

The second suspect, Javier Gonzalez Jr., a licensed insurance agent, was also arrested that day. Gonzalez faces allegations of submitting false and fraudulent insurance claims and being part of a conspiracy to defraud.

These arrests are a result of an ongoing investigation by the DFS’s Criminal Investigation Division, with prosecution to be handled by the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office.
