Investigation Launched After Death During Alley Cleanup in Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Authorities are investigating the death of an individual that occurred while employees from Louisville Solid Waste Management were performing an alley cleanup.

A representative from Louisville Metro Public Works noted that the incident took place on Thursday just after 9 a.m. in the 2500 block of Cedar Street, close to 26th Street, during a routine cleaning of the alley.

The spokesperson highlighted that alley cleanups are conducted hundreds of times daily throughout the city.

Officer Adam Sears of the Louisville Metro Police Department reported that they received a call regarding a person down at the intersection of 26th Street and Muhammad Ali Boulevard.

Initially, police suspected that the woman was experiencing a medical emergency, which prompted the involvement of the LMPD’s Homicide Unit. However, on Friday, authorities clarified that they were investigating the woman’s death due to injuries “from contact with equipment on a garbage truck.”

Due to the involvement of a city vehicle, the Public Integrity Unit of the LMPD is also looking into the matter. The Public Works employees directly involved have been placed on administrative leave, a standard protocol in such cases.

Witnesses in the vicinity informed WDRB that the woman was homeless and frequently traversed the streets. Her identity has not yet been disclosed.
