Addressing Port Delays in Nigeria

Truck Transit Parks (TTP) has focused on mitigating delays and traffic at Nigeria’s ports for nearly five years, recognizing the significant impacts on trade, investment, and costs. The ongoing congestion not only affects the economy but also disrupts the daily lives of the local communities around Apapa and Tincan ports.

Innovative Solutions with Eto

Jama Onwubuariri, Co-Founder and CEO of TTP, explained how his team is utilizing the Internet of Things through the Eto call-up system, a digital app designed to enhance truck movement, expedite cargo delivery, and eliminate middlemen and extortion. Early results illustrate improvements in orderliness, timeliness, predictability, and revenue assurance for businesses.

The Functionality of Truck Parks

The truck park system integrates infrastructure, technology, and stakeholder management. In the densely populated port areas, thousands of trucks operate daily, leading to inevitable congestion. TTP’s system ensures that trucks are scheduled and directed to various parking facilities, minimizing chaos while enabling ports and terminals to prepare for incoming vehicles through a booking process implemented via the Eto app.

Impact on Port Congestion and Economy

Prior to TTP’s interventions, Nigeria lost approximately N7.6 trillion annually due to port congestion, an issue they began reversing in March 2021. The elimination of informal payments and reduction in demurrage fees has resulted in drastic savings—hauling costs have declined from N1.5 million to about N350,000, showcasing a 70% reduction in transportation expenses.

Tracking and Monitoring Progress

Since its establishment, TTP has successfully processed over three million truck movements, reducing the time needed to access ports from weeks to just days. Their data-driven approach allows for better monitoring of efficiency, enabling stakeholders to make informed decisions and fostering accountability within the transport sector.

Eliminating Extortion through Digital Solutions

The Eto app not only enhances scheduling and efficiency but also plays a critical role in combating extortion. The ability for users to report non-compliance anonymously has empowered truckers and businesses to hold enforcement agents accountable, thereby increasing transparency within the port system.

Future of Mobility and Trade in Nigeria

Improving Nigeria’s mobility infrastructure through digital innovation is vital for enhancing its competitiveness in regional and global trade. By fostering collaborations with customs officials and other nations, TTP aims to streamline the logistics system, reduce border delays, and make Nigerian goods more marketable in the African Continental Free Trade Area and beyond.
