Investigation Launched Following Fatal Incident in Louisville Alley

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — An inquiry is underway after an individual died while employees of Louisville Solid Waste Management were conducting alley maintenance.

A representative from Louisville Metro Public Works reported that the incident occurred on Thursday shortly after 9 a.m. in the 2500 block of Cedar Street, near 26th Street, during a routine cleanup of the alley.

The spokesperson mentioned that these alley cleanups occur frequently, with hundreds taking place daily across the city.

Louisville Metro Police Officer Adam Sears stated that they received a call about a person down in the vicinity of 26th Street and Muhammad Ali Boulevard.

Initially, police noted that the woman seemed to be experiencing a medical emergency, prompting the involvement of LMPD’s Homicide Unit for further investigation.

However, on Friday, Louisville police indicated they were looking into the death of a woman who had suffered injuries due to “contact with equipment on a garbage truck.”

Given that a city vehicle was implicated, the LMPD’s Public Integrity Unit is now conducting the investigation. The Public Works employees present at the scene have been put on administrative leave, which is a standard protocol during such inquiries.

Local residents shared with WDRB that the woman was reportedly homeless and frequently walked the streets. The name of the woman has not yet been disclosed.
