Meet Chris Hahn and His Furry Co-Pilot
Chris Hahn affectionately refers to his furry companion as “a bundle of joy,” especially when the ferret is asleep for around 18 hours a day. However, during the remaining six hours, Hahn describes Four Sox, affectionately known as “Lilshit,” as resembling “a toddler on meth.”
A Culinary Journey on the Road
Originally from New Orleans, Hahn transitioned into the trucking industry after a 14-year career as a chef. Now an owner-operator, he spends much of his time on the road but still enjoys cooking. He has equipped his 2008 Kenworth T660 studio sleeper with all the essentials for meal preparation, jokingly stating, “It literally has everything but the kitchen sink.”
Creating a Ferret-Friendly Environment
Hahn has taken extra precautions to ensure Lilshit’s safety by “ferret-proofing” the truck and building a network of tubes for the ferret to explore. Additionally, a plastic tub filled with toys keeps Lilshit entertained during downtime.
The Inspiration Behind the Choice
The idea to have a ferret as a travel buddy originated from a chance encounter with another driver at a truck stop in Texas. “When he saw me, he quickly shoved his ferret into his bag,” Hahn recounted. “That’s when I thought, ‘You know, I’m bored. I’m lonely.’”
Research and Adoption
Following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, when isolation became more prominent, Hahn pursued the idea of getting a ferret. He dedicated four months to researching the care and requirements for ferrets before adopting Lilshit late last summer from a local pet shop in Pendleton, Oregon. “When I saw him, it was love at first sight!” he shared.
Life on the Road Together
Living with Lilshit has added a new dynamic to Hahn’s life. Although the ferret can be mischievous, as evidenced by a recent incident where he intentionally missed the litter box and dug through the trash, Hahn finds the experience rewarding. “It’s either 100 mph or the cutest thing you’ve ever seen,” he said of the ferret’s behavior.
Advice for Future Ferret Owners
For those considering adopting a ferret, Hahn advises potential owners to utilize online resources and conduct thorough research. “Ferrets are expensive little pets with their unique health issues, but they bring immense joy,” he concluded, emphasizing their distinct personalities. “Your shoes will never be the same!”
