Meet Jerry Clark: A Trucking Veteran with a Big Heart

Jerry Clark, originally from North Carolina and currently a driver for Estes Express Lines, embodies a larger-than-life persona that matches the incredible number of safe miles he has logged throughout his career.

Early Driving Journey

Clark began his driving career in 1992 with Schneider and quickly reached one million miles in just seven years. He achieved his second million in roughly eight years, which he attributes to a short stint as a trainer that momentarily shifted his focus.

Stellar Mileage Achievements

Since joining Estes eight years ago after taking breaks to pursue other jobs, Clark has accumulated a staggering four million accident-free miles and shows no signs of slowing down.

A Life on the Road

“I’ve visited every state at least 25 times and Canada 12 times,” he shared. “My wife and I partnered as a team at Schneider, being recognized as elite drivers for our dedication to long hauls, which allowed us to pay off our bills and become debt-free.”

From Mechanic to Driver

Interestingly, Clark initially aimed to work as a mechanic after his military service during Operation Desert Storm. “In the Army, I drove a wrecker, which is similar to a truck. After I left, I planned to become a mechanic, but then I discovered the financial potential in driving,” he recalled.

A Unique Perspective on Night Driving

Clark loves driving at night, finding a rhythm with audiobooks, although he notes the challenges posed by wildlife. “Traffic is lighter at night, but animals can be a big hazard. I’ve hit deer before, including a trio in a single incident!”

The Value of Safety and Job Satisfaction

When asked about his safety record, Clark attributed it to both his military training and the robust safety protocols at Estes. “It’s about maintaining a safe distance. Here, safety is a constant focus, and they prioritize it every quarter,” he said. Now on a set route between North Carolina and Indianapolis, Clark has no intention of retiring soon, especially given the supportive environment at work.
