Inspection of Semi Truck Uncovers Violations

A Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles (VT DMV) inspector identified multiple violations involving both equipment and the driver during two different traffic stops on the same semi truck within a short time frame.

Initial Traffic Stop

On January 10, 2026, the inspector acted upon a “Be On the Lookout” (BOLO) alert regarding a commercial vehicle driver reported to be driving erratically and unable to keep their lane.

Driver’s Behavior Noted

Upon locating the vehicle, the inspector saw the driver using a cellphone while driving.

Inspection Findings

The inspector carried out a traffic stop and conducted a thorough commercial vehicle inspection. The result was that the vehicle was placed out of service due to several safety violations, such as:

  • Defective air hoses
  • Tires with less than 1/32 inch of tread depth
  • Over 20% of the brakes out of adjustment
  • Inoperable turn signals on the trailer
  • Air leaks not at proper connections
  • Loose air reservoir tanks

Consequently, the truck driver received a citation for using a cellphone while operating a commercial vehicle.

Second Traffic Stop

Shortly thereafter, the same CMV was seen departing the area again. A second traffic stop was initiated, revealing that none of the previous violations had been remedied. The owner/operator of the vehicle was then fined for breaching the out-of-service order.

Final Outcome

Ultimately, the tractor-trailer combination was towed away from the roadway due to ongoing equipment violations.
