Tareena’s Journey into Trucking

Tareena, a professional driver for NFI, vividly recalls her first day at trucking school.

“One of the instructors asked me if I was lost and what I was doing there,” she shared.

Despite this discouraging start, Tareena pursued her passion for truck driving, earning her CDL and gaining valuable on-road experience.

Her decision builds on a family legacy; her brother has been a truck driver for over 30 years.

“He taught me to drive my first car, emphasizing everything about vehicles,” she reminisced. “I even learned how to change tires from him!”

Training and Professional Growth

After losing her job during the COVID-19 pandemic, she found the perfect opportunity to switch gears and learn to drive large trucks.

“I’ve been driving ever since and will finish my third year with NFI next March,” she said.

Reflecting on her training, she noted the quality of her instructor, who had over 30 years of experience.

“He helped me break bad habits and replace them with beneficial ones,” Tareena stated.

For instance, he encouraged her to use traditional maps over GPS for better navigation skills.

Community at NFI

Tareena feels a sense of belonging at NFI, highlighting the camaraderie among drivers, regardless of gender.

“We beep our horns at each other when we meet on the road,” she said, recalling how fellow drivers supported her as she learned to haul flatbeds.

“One day while practicing, a female driver offered her assistance, and soon I had help from several women showing me the ropes.”

Choosing Between Local and OTR Routes

While many drivers relish the freedom of long-haul trips, others appreciate the stability of local routes.

“I started over the road and loved it; however, I now drive locally to spend more time with my family,” Tareena shared.

Although she enjoys her current local route, she admits she sometimes misses the thrill of extended drives.

“Just me, the road, and my music — it’s a peaceful experience,” she explained.

Empowerment in Trucking

“This industry is still male-dominated, and I’m proud to be taken seriously as a truck driver,” she remarked.

Tareena finds fulfillment in being an inspiration to other women, often receiving surprised reactions when people see her driving a truck.

Ultimately, she values the ongoing support from fellow drivers, which she considers the best aspect of her career.
