Transitioning into the Trucking Industry

Imagine enjoying a successful career, perhaps as a physical therapist or a public relations specialist, only to pivot and take the reins of a trucking and logistics company. This is the path that sisters Lisa Andrade Gonima and Andrea Andrade-Ahumada chose when they left their respective jobs to manage their father’s business, Del Rey Express, in 2014.

Foundations of Family Business

Founded 40 years ago by Rey and Silvia Andrade with just one truck, Del Rey Express has grown significantly. Rey Andrade, a long-haul truck driver, inspired admiration in his daughters as they nostalgically recall their childhood days dispatching truckers from home, marking down details on a notepad.

Growth and Modernization

Upon taking over in 2014, Andrade Gonima became the CEO, while Andrade-Ahumada stepped into the president role. The sisters expanded the operation from 12 trucks to over 40, alongside 45 drivers. During the pandemic, they partnered with H-E-B for local deliveries, further strengthening business growth.

Acknowledging Their Role in the Industry

In a recent interview, both sisters discussed their experiences in the trucking realm, emphasizing that their presence in leadership positions is a source of empowerment, particularly for women. They cherish the satisfaction of seeing drivers they hired now owning their own equipment, fulfilling their dreams.

Challenges and Transitioning Roles

Andrade Gonima shared concerns about how drivers would perceive her as a younger female taking charge, but found that genuine engagement gained their respect. The adjustment from her previous career to the complexities of the trucking industry was not easy, yet rewarding as she continued her family’s legacy.

Women in a Male-Dominated Field

Both sisters acknowledged the challenges of being women in a traditionally male-dominated industry. They encourage young women considering careers in logistics, highlighting the importance of support networks. They believe that women bring unique contributions to the trucking business, aiming to enhance safety and promote community well-being.

Looking to the Future

While apprehension exists around advances like driverless trucks, Andrade Gonima noted that technology is a vital element of the industry’s future. By adapting to innovations such as electronic logging devices and artificial intelligence in safety measures, they are preparing for inevitable changes in logistics.
